Jorge Prado (22) is the new MXGP world champion. The Spaniard, who has lived in Lommel for years, was already certain of the world title after winning the first series in Maggiora.
Prado won the first series in Maggiora on Sunday afternoon (ahead of Seewer and Forato) and saw Romain Febvre, his only remaining title competitor, drop out with engine trouble. The GasGas driver therefore has a 93 point lead, while only 85 can be earned. For Prado it is already his third world title, the first in the premier class. Previously, he was also the best in MX2 twice (2018-2019).
A well-deserved title by the way. Prado already took the lead in the world championship in the first Grand Prix, in Villa La Angostura, Argentina. And he never relinquished that leading position. Key to his success: regularity. The Spaniard took ‘only’ two GP victories this year (so far), but won 14 series and 10 qualifying races.
Childhood dream
Prado didn’t even know at the finish that he had already won the world title. It wasn’t until he saw his team members and family rushing towards him that he realized it. And that caused a lot of emotions. Prado fell into the arms of his parents and girlfriend and let his tears flow freely.
“I’ve been dreaming about this since I was a child. Man, what a long road it was,” said a very emotional Prado. “I’m happy to have such good people around me, people who have always believed in me. MXGP World Champion! As the first Spaniard ever. Delicious.”
Geerts comes second in the first series of MX2
Motocross rider Jago Geerts (Yamaha) finished second on Sunday in the first series of the MX2 class in the Italian Grand Prix, the eighteenth and penultimate World Championship round. Liam Everts (KTM) finished fourth.
On the circuit in Maggiora, the German Simon Längenfelder (GasGas) raced to victory. Italian World Cup leader Andrea Adamo (KTM) finished in third place, behind three-time vice world champion Geerts. Lucas Coenen (Husqvarna) finished fifth, his twin brother Sacha (KTM) 15th. Pako Destercq (Fantic) had to give up early.
In the World Cup standings, Adamo retains the lead with 759 points. Everts is second on 57 points. Geerts is in third place with 681 points. Längenfelder has one point less than Geerts, the German is fourth.
Adamo can be crowned world champion on Sunday if he manages to gain a 61-point lead over his pursuers after the second series.
