Despite missing out on pole position, George Russell is still very satisfied with the result during qualifying. Russell also expects that he will have a ‘tyre advantage’ over both Ferraris during the race.
“When you were in the car it was like being in a sauna, you were sweating like crazy,” Russell began his review of qualifying. “But you have to stay focused, you have to stay cool.”
Russell then explained why he wasn’t too disappointed about missing out on pole position. Especially considering that both Red Bulls do not start at the front.
“The team did a great job strategically,” said Russell. “We have a different strategy than the others. We have an extra set of medium tires for Sunday, something no one else around us has.
Russell expects that the Ferraris will suffer more from tire wear, just like during the rest of the season, and that should give him an advantage during the race.
“To get into Q3 and be on the front row of the grid with a strategic advantage for Sunday is very exciting,” Russell looked ahead to the race. “I think it will be very close between a strategy with one pit stop or two pit stops. With our mediums we can put Ferrari in a difficult position and try to force them into mistakes in order to gain the upper hand. That’s what we’ll try to do.”
