During a super exciting conclusion to the Singapore GP, George Russell seemed to have a great chance of victory. However, Russell crashed on the very last lap and did not even finish on the podium or in the points.
“Right now you just want to curl up in a ball and not be with anyone,” Russell said after crashing on the very last lap. “It’s the worst feeling in the world when you’re so physically and mentally drained, when you miss such a chance to win and make such a mistake. It’s heartbreaking.”
After Russell started the race from second place and lost one place at the start, Russell still managed to take a shot at victory at the very end of the race. Russell seemed to be able to attack Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz on the very last lap, but instead of a podium place or even a victory, a crash followed.
“To be standing there an hour later, it’s been such a great weekend, I really feel like I’ve ridden better than ever,” Russell tried to remember the positive a little later. “Qualifying yesterday was great and the race was great.”
“I was confident, I felt comfortable and I’m not going to let a mistake of like two centimeters get me down. It will be a tough night, probably a tough morning too, but then I will put it behind me and move forward.”
“I can only apologize to the team because they deserved more than this, but ‘shit happens’.”
Russell said he saw Lando Norris hit the wall in front of him, but then he did the same, albeit with more serious consequences.
“It’s amazing how quickly you think because I saw Lando lightly hit the wall and in that millisecond I thought ‘Oh, he just hit the wall’ and two tenths of a second later I hit the wall myself. It was certainly not Lando who hit the wall that surprised me and outwitted me.”
“I’m not really going to minimize it but it wasn’t really that big of a mistake. If I had spun or had a lock up and ended up in the wall, my feelings would have been different.”
“But to hit the wall on the last lap is such a ridiculous mistake. That’s why it feels so strange right now. It’s probably due to a lack of concentration. Like I said, it was the last lap and I knew the chance for victory had passed and it shows how you have to stay focused no matter what the scenario is.”
