This week, we bid farewell to the Lightning port as the iPhone 15 series and Pro models are launched, marking the end of its story. We have previously delved into Lightning, exploring its capabilities and limitations. However, here we simply wish to reminisce about all the devices that were powered by Lightning.
The story began in 2012 with the release of the iPhone 5, the iPad 4, and the brand new iPad mini. Apple also made the switch to Lightning with a couple of iPods, namely the 7th generation nano and the 5th generation touch. This was significant, as the 30-pin connector, which was replaced by Lightning, was originally utilized in the iPod following the discontinuation of FireWire.
At the time, the iPhone 5, along with the iPads and iPods, still retained the 3.5mm headphone jack, which would eventually be phased out with the iPhone 7. Nonetheless, it was clear that change was on the horizon, as Apple introduced a version of the wired EarPods headphones that utilized a Lightning plug instead of the standard 3.5mm jack.
Before we move forward, it is worth mentioning that we will only highlight a select few accessories to avoid unnecessary clutter, primarily cables and chargers. The sole accessory of note in this regard is the Lightning to 3.5mm adapter that Apple included with every iPhone 7 in 2016, along with a pair of Lightning EarPods. This practice continued with subsequent models until 2018.
As you can see, the list is predominantly comprised of iDevices, but there are also notable mentions such as the wireless AirPods, which are also transitioning to USB-C. Additionally, there are a few small battery-powered electronic devices like keyboards and mice that should have transitioned to USB-C along with the Macs they are connected to.
Farewell, Lightning.
