Yesterday, we discussed the recent changes to the pricing structure of the popular Unity engine and the backlash it caused in the game development community. However, the controversy is far from over.

In fact, recent developments have brought the concerns of mobile developers into sharper focus.

Mediation Platforms And Their Purpose

According to a report from mobilegamer.bizUnity is allegedly planning to waive its controversial Runtime Fee for developers who use its own ad mediation platform, LevelPlay.

What exactly is a mediation platform? It is a tool that helps manage ads within games, automating many processes for developers and acting as a link between developers and ad networks.

These platforms play a crucial role in determining the revenue generated by games with in-game ads, so developers have valid reasons to be selective.

However, it seems that this move may have had the opposite effect of what was intended.

Numerous Mobile Developers Voice Their Objections

An open letter signed by several developers and publishers, including Century Games (developers of Whiteout Survival), Azur Games, and hypercasual publisher Ducky, has been released. They announced their decision to turn off Unity Ads in their work and keep them disabled until Unity reconsiders its decisions.

The letter also encourages others to take the same action.

This news comes at a time when some of Unity’s offices in the US are closed due to potential threats to the safety of employees. It is important to note that the majority of Unity employees do not have influence over company-wide decisions, and even if they did, threatening them is not appropriate.

So what’s next? As of now, Unity has shown no indication of changing its stance. The official Twitter account released a statement addressing some potential questions about the policy.

The statement mentioned that repeat installations would not incur additional charges, and illegitimate installs would also not be subject to fees. However, the criteria for determining these circumstances remains unclear.

Therefore, the revolt shows no signs of abating. We will closely monitor this situation and keep you updated on any major developments.
