Before the Singapore GP, Lewis Hamilton lashed out at the statements made by Dr. Helmut Marko has done about Sergio Perez and Mexicans.
Lewis Hamilton usually comes to the fore very quickly and often makes himself heard when forms of racism, discrimination or infringements against inclusivity occur. After the statements of Dr. Helmut Marko, however, he was noticeably quiet until the Thursday prior to the race weekend in Singapore.
Hamilton stated that he was not surprised by such statements and stated that no important figure from a team or organization should make such statements.
“What he said is completely unacceptable. There is no room for any form of discrimination in sport, so to have leading figures and people in such positions making such statements is not good for progress in this area,” Hamilton told ‘Sky Sports F1’ .
“It shows once again the work that still needs to be done, there are a lot of people in the background trying to combat these things.”
“However, it is difficult to make progress when there are people at the top with such attitudes, it prevents us from making progress. I’m not surprised.”
“I don’t know exactly what was said, you have to ask Checo, but I think more needs to be done than just apologizing and saying it’s okay now.”
“More needs to be done, when teams have someone, especially riders, making comments like that they are usually fired or at least an announcement is made that they do not support such things.”
“It’s interesting to see that they haven’t done that now, but it’s not my team. It’s not how we deal with things like that as a team.”
“It shows how important the work I try to do with the team and the sport is. We still have a long way to go to ensure this is a more inclusive environment.”
