Google announced today a new 10-year software support for Chromebooks, promising to make the devices even more sustainable and reduce the cost of ownership even further.
The most interesting part is the 10-year software support. Every Chromebook released after 2021 will receive free monthly updates for 10 years. Devices manufactured before 2021 will still have the opportunity for extended software support, as long as users and IT administrators extend the automatic updates until 10 years after receiving the last update. However, these extensions will not guarantee that all new features will work on older Chromebooks.
Google has worked closely with vendor partners to ensure long software support, requiring compatibility with all hardware such as Wi-Fi modems and CPUs.
The search giant is also working to ensure easy and timely repairs. Since Chromebooks are widely used in the education sector, many schools rely on in-house repairs. In fact, about 80% of American schools offer in-house remedial work. Chromebook parts are easily accessible through the Chromebook repair program, and no physical USB key is required to perform repairs, reducing classroom downtime.
In the coming months, Google will release updates aimed at improving the energy efficiency of the devices. They will implement features that preserve battery life and shut down energy-intensive processes.
