There are several aspects to consider when discussing the Fairphone 5. The most significant one is its commitment to fairness – the device is manufactured by individuals dedicated to making the world more sustainable. The workers who assemble the phone receive a living wage and will even recycle your old phone for you.

The Fairphone 5 is packaged in a recycled paper box and includes some informational leaflets, but nothing else.

Another admirable aspect of the Fairphone 5 is its durability. The company behind the phone offers a 5-year warranty and guarantees a minimum of 8 years of software support. Additionally, many integral components of the phone can be replaced by the user using just a Phillips screwdriver.

The Fairphone consists of ten interchangeable modules, including the OLED screen, rear and front cameras, USB port, and battery. Changing the battery is even tool-free, thanks to the removable back panel.

This brings us to the third, and perhaps most impactful, aspect of the Fairphone 5. It has a pleasing retro feel. Starting with its substantial and wide design, featuring prominent curved metal edges, it stands in stark contrast to the current trend of slim frames and flatness. The phone embraces a simpler time when phones were not excessively thin and made of extravagant materials.

The screen is bordered by large black frames, and the removable back cover pays homage to a time when phones could be opened and customized. Ah, the good old days.

The straightforward and comforting theme continues with the software. It offers a simplistic version of Android, even though it’s the latest iteration, version 13. The phone starts at a 60Hz refresh rate (with an option for 90Hz) and includes on-screen buttons (with gesture capabilities as well). It feels like we’ve been transported back to the early days of 2019 smartphones.

The Fairphone 5 could just as easily be named the Fresh Air Phone 5, although we acknowledge it lacks the same ring. Our review is on its way, so stay tuned!
