After Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko’s statements about Sergio Perez, calls for him to be fired are becoming increasingly louder. It remains remarkably quiet from the Red Bull camp.
Dr. Helmut Marko made some remarkable statements about Sergio Perez that have gone down the wrong way with many Mexicans, but also with other people. Helmut Marko stated in ‘Sport und Talk’ on ‘Servus TV’ that Sergio Perez has ‘fluctuations in form’ and that this could be due to his ‘South American’ origins. Marko received a lot of criticism for his statements, and Mexico is also part of ‘North America’.
The call to fire Helmut Marko is becoming increasingly louder, even though Helmut Marko has since apologized for his statements. However, it remained remarkably quiet from the Red Bull F1 team. No response, after much insistence the racing team announced that team boss Christian Horner would respond in Singapore.
It is striking, however, that Red Bull Racing has not intervened so far. However, Helmut Marko is officially not employed by Red Bull Racing but by Red Bull. Yet there is fierce criticism, especially because Red Bull put aside racing talent Juri Vips last year (Red Bull stops cooperation with reserve driver Juri Vips after a racism incident) and announced that it will apply a zero tolerance policy.
Several petitions have already appeared online to fire Helmut Marko. It is striking that the FIA, F1 and Red Bull have not officially responded, while this has happened in the past in other ‘incidents’. In addition to Mexico, where a lot of attention is obviously being paid to the matter, there is also a call for action in Germany.
For example, the German newspaper ‘Der Westen’ published an unmistakable message in a commentary: “Get out! Red Bull has no choice and must respond immediately,” reads the title of an article that refers to a zero tolerance policy that Red Bull referred to at the time when Juri Vips was pushed aside.
“The racing team now has to prove that it means business. This time it is not about a small talent from the academy but about one of their leaders. Motorsport director Helmut Marko, the strong man behind Christian Horner at Red Bull, has caused a scandal with a racist comment. If they are consistent, the only result may be dismissal.”
“Zero tolerance leaves no room for a different result,” writes the newspaper ‘Der Westen’.
