After a difficult race weekend in Monza, the Mercedes F1 team expects to perform a lot better at the Marina Bay Circuit in Singapore.
“There are reasons to believe the car will perform better, the Singapore track is a maximum downforce track,” said Andrew Shovlin. “Our performance on high downforce circuits such as Barcelona, Budapest and even Zandvoort was good, we had a very strong performance.”
“We hope that we will be better again and be in a position where we can go for podiums.”
At Mercedes they are convinced that they will be able to compete at the front again in Singapore.
“The track in Singapore presents some unique challenges and there are also some changes to the layout this year,” said Vowles.
“Four corners have been removed towards the end of the lap, where the driving took place under the grandstand. A longer straight section has now been replaced and that will affect the functioning of the tires somewhat. There will be slightly less energy but it will still be an abrasive track surface. We have the softest tire compounds here so it will be a tough race in terms of tires, the track surface is also very bumpy.”
“Add to that the fact that it is a night race. There are plenty of challenges, but we are very optimistic and think we will perform strongly.”
