Jean Francois Baril, the CEO of HMD Global, has announced on LinkedIn that HMD Global is entering a new era. The company will be launching its own line of smartphones, separate from the Nokia devices. The specific date of the phone announcement has not been disclosed, however, the HMD-branded devices will be introduced alongside the Nokia devices. The new brand will also bring partnerships with undisclosed new partners. The decision to establish their own brand was not made hastily, as HMD has been protecting its brand at the EUIPO office for several years. The challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic and the complexities of 2022 have accelerated their pursuit of a new future for the company. The recent EUIPO filings likely offer a preview of how the brand will appear on the new HMD phones. Baril also mentioned that HMD has established its own Research and Development, software development, distribution, and operational networks. These initiatives are expected to accelerate the growth of the brand. HMD is now known as the fastest-growing 5G smartphone manufacturer with a diverse range of devices suitable for digital detoxification. Therefore, it seems that HMD is preparing for life after its licensing agreement with Nokia expires. The agreement to reintroduce Nokia devices was signed in 2016 and will end in 2026, which is only two years away, plus a few months. Furthermore, there is a possibility that Nokia may want to continue licensing its phone brand to another manufacturer and is advising HMD to be prepared. Overall, a new player is entering the smartphone business and it will be interesting to see what strategy HMD will adopt. Will it be the same, focusing on a wide range of sustainable and affordable devices, or might they introduce a competitive device as well? Source | Via Cheers Zh4yo for the tip!
