Our compatriot Stoffel Vandoorne is currently a reserve driver for the Aston Martin F1 team. Will we ever see Vandoorne again in Formula 1? That chance seems extremely small, but at the same time you should never completely rule out something like that.
Stoffel Vandoorne raced for the McLaren F1 team a few years ago, but our compatriot had a lot of bad luck when he got his chance to race in Formula 1. Together with Fernando Alonso he raced at one of the worst moments in the history of the McLaren F1 team.
Vandoorne was replaced after two seasons in Formula 1, but has not been idle in the meantime. Vandoorne was crowned Formula E champion last year and this year he raced again in Formula E. He was also a test and reserve driver for Peugeot’s WEC team.
Of course, we also regularly see Vandoorne in the F1 paddock because he is a test and reserve driver for the Aston Martin F1 team. Asked whether he still has a chance of getting a permanent racing seat at Aston Martin or another F1 team, Vandoorne answers as follows: “I have to be realistic, the chance is very minimal,” Vandoorne replied in conversation with ‘GPblog’.
“You never know what will happen, bizarre things happen in this world. I do my job as best I can, but my focus is elsewhere, on my career in Formula E and probably endurance racing. My priority is always Formula E. That is the championship in which I race myself. If a race clashes with Formula 1, then I will not be at Aston Martin.”
According to Vandoorne, however, it is very important for his career to be present in Formula 1. Formula 1 is a world in which a lot of contacts are made.
“The F1 world remains special. This is where you make the connections. All the bosses here also decide what happens in other categories, so it is important to keep good relationships.”
