According to Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff, Max Verstappen has had ‘easier’ teammates than Lewis Hamilton in the past and that partly explains his record of ten F1 victories in a row. Moreover, the car would have been built more to Verstappen’s wishes. Jenson Button largely agrees.
“Lewis has had some tough teammates,” Button told Sky Sports. “He has had world champions as teammate, Max has not.”
“I think Lewis has had tougher teammates but I wouldn’t want to go up against Max.”
Competing against Hamilton or Verstappen in the same F1 car? Then Jenson Button would prefer not to compete against Verstappen and there are several reasons for this.
“I would be more afraid to compete against Max in the same car. I think it’s because the car is built around his driving style, or because it’s a car that Adrian Newey gives him.”
“I think Adrian Newey gives him a car and says, ‘This is the fastest car in the world. If you remove downforce at the front, it will be slower but easier to drive.”
“Max then responds with: ‘Okay, I have to drive the way you made the car and I have to drive it as fast as possible’.”
“I think he can do that very well and that many drivers experience problems with that.”
