Red Bull Motorsport advisor Dr. Helmut Marko has formally apologized for the offensive statements about Sergio Perez’s origins.

Marko recently described Perez as South American, while Mexico actually belongs to the North of America. Marko also made it clear that it was because of his origins that he had a lack of concentration, unlike Sebastian Vettel or Max Verstappen.

The Austrian tried to clarify his statements, but ultimately a formal apology was issued.

“Regarding my comment about Sergio Perez on ServusTV Sport and Talk on Monday, September 4, I would like to apologize for my offensive comment and I want to make it absolutely clear that I do not believe we can generalize about people from any country, any whatever race, whatever ethnicity,” Marko said.

“I tried to make it clear that Checo has had mixed performances this year, but it was wrong to attribute this to his cultural origins.”

Helmut Marko has been critical of Perez’s performance more than once this season, but in the last four races he still managed to finish on the podium three times.
