The release of the new smartphones in the Mate 60 series and the foldable Mate X5 is notable not only because of the appearance of these devices, but also because HUAWEI has returned to using its proprietary Kirin processors. However, the US authorities have now launched an investigation into the new Kirin 9000s chip due to potential use of restricted technologies by HUAWEI.
HUAWEI itself does not advertise the processor used in its new smartphones. It wasn’t until users and bloggers received the Mate 60 Pro that it was revealed that the Kirin 9000s was installed inside. This chipset is based on a 7nm process technology, comparable in performance to the Snapdragon 888, and most importantly, it supports fifth-generation networks, which were blocked for HUAWEI in Qualcomm chips.
“We are working to obtain more information about the nature and composition of the proposed 7nm chip. Let’s be clear: export controls are just one tool in the US government’s arsenal to address the national security threats posed by the PRC. The restrictions in place since 2019 have crippled HUAWEI and forced it to reinvent itself at a significant cost to the Chinese government,” said a spokesman from the US Department of Commerce.
Interestingly, with the news of this investigation, shares of Chinese manufacturers of semiconductor equipment rose in price by 20%.
