According to Fernando Alonso, who himself drove for Ferrari for several seasons, Ferrari’s strong performance at the Italian GP comes as no surprise. According to Alonso, Ferrari always performs very well at Monza and there is a reason for that.
Aston Martin and Fernando Alonso themselves did not perform so well last weekend, in their own words because the characteristics of the Monza circuit did not suit the Aston Martin F1 car well. Those characteristics suited the Ferrari F1 car much better.
Add to that the installation of new engines and, according to Alonso, that explains Ferrari’s good performance last weekend. According to Alonso, we should therefore not expect Ferrari to be equally competitive in the coming races and to challenge Red Bull to the same extent.
“This is a Ferrari circuit and it has been for years,” Alonso told media in Monza afterwards. “They put in new engines and it’s always the same at this race, but the championship consists of 22 races.”
Alonso believes Aston Martin will be a lot more competitive at the next race in Singapore, which Alonso believes will be much less the case at Ferrari.
“Singapore will certainly be better than Monza for us but to win, we know it’s difficult with Red Bull who are able to perform exceptionally well every Sunday.”
“Let’s wait and see if we are one of the candidates competing in Singapore, the pecking order behind Red Bull seems to be changing.”
“At the last two street circuits, Alpine performed very strongly in Monaco with Esteban Ocon finishing third in qualifying and the race. In Baku, Ferrari was dominant with Leclerc on pole position.”
