According to Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff, Max Verstappen is still the favorite for victory despite his second place on the grid, although he secretly supports Ferrari in the hope that Verstappen does not win today, which Toto Wolff believes would be good for the sport.

Despite the fact that Max Verstappen will not start the Italian GP from pole and is on the starting grid in a ‘Ferrari sandwich’, according to Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff, Verstappen is still the big favorite for victory.

“Ferrari’s long runs have been spectacular but Max Verstappen is also there, as always. I hope we can race against the gentlemen at the front and hang in there,” Wolff looks ahead to the race who does not believe Mercedes will have a chance of winning. To what extent Ferrari has a chance, however, remains to be seen, according to Toto Wolff.

“Whether Ferrari can convert the good speed from qualifying into good race speed remains to be seen,” said Wolff. “I think Verstappen is still the favorite for victory. The car is doing really well and Max is flawless so far.”

Nevertheless, Toto Wolff will secretly also support Ferrari. He does allow the Italians to beat Max Verstappen and triumph here.

“It would be good for Formula 1 if Max Verstappen’s life was made miserable. If it’s not us then it should be a Ferrari,” concludes the Mercedes motorsport boss.
