With his victory at the GP of Italy, Max Verstappen has written history today. After all, it was Verstappen’s tenth F1 victory in a row, an absolute record. Verstappen himself never thought such a thing was possible.
“I never dared to believe that this was possible. It’s always difficult to be so consistent. I’m happy to win ten in a row. Eventually it will stop, but right now it’s really enjoying it,” Verstappen replied when asked after the race what ten F1 victories in a row means to him.
During the race, Verstappen had to compete with both Ferraris, but once past Carlos Sainz, Verstappen was able to finish the race in a largely controlled manner.
“It was a strong race. We had to work hard for it today, but that certainly made it fun,” said Verstappen. “We had good speed and handled the tires well, but the Ferrari had a lot of top speed. Our DRS is not very effective this weekend because we had to reduce the top wing. That made it all that bit more difficult to really have a good run and attack in the first corner.”
“So I had to force Carlos into a mistake and try to keep my patience because it was still a very long race. I saw that they were struggling with the rear tires, so I had to pick my moment. Finally he braked once and I had better traction coming out of turn two. Once I got past Carlos, we were able to do our own race and it went really well.”
