According to Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff, there has never been any doubt about extending the collaboration with Lewis Hamilton. According to Wolff, Hamilton is the “biggest world star of F1” and must help ensure that Mercedes can fight for the F1 title again in the coming years.
“Continuing with the current driver pairing was an easy decision,” said Toto Wolff on the announcement that Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will also form the driver duo at Mercedes for the next two years. “We have the strongest driver duo on the grid and both drivers play a vital role in the team moving forward. The strength and stability they provide will be critical building blocks for our future success.”
Wolff then also praised Lewis Hamilton who managed to win six of his seven drivers’ titles with Mercedes.
“Our partnership with Lewis is one of the most successful in the history of the sport. It was a formality that we would work together again, it gives us energy that we can now officially confirm this.”
“His qualities as a pure race driver are proven by his incredible statistics, over the years he has become a mainstay of our team.”
“Those leadership qualities are crucial as we refocus on fighting for world titles. As Formula 1’s biggest global star, he must play a key role in our commitments to diversity, inclusiveness and sustainability. That will form the basis for our successes in the years to come.”
