According to Fernando Alonso, part of the explanation for Max Verstappen’s dominance in the sport can be attributed to the fact that he manages to perform at 100 per cent much more often than other drivers.
Max Verstappen took his 46th F1 victory last weekend at his home race in Zandvoort. It was Verstappen’s ninth consecutive F1 win this season, equaling Sebastian Vettel’s record. Verstappen dominates Formula 1 like never before and many are looking for an explanation for that dominance.
Two-time F1 champion Fernando Alonso believes he knows part of the explanation for that dominance. According to Alonso, Verstappen manages to perform almost constantly at 100 percent, in addition to having a very good and competitive car.
“To win in any professional sport in such a dominant way is so very complicated,” Alonso said in Zandvoort last weekend.
“To perform at the same level as him… we obviously have a lot of riders with a lot of confidence! I therefore believe that I can perform as well as him. I don’t know about Lewis, but as far as I’m concerned, sure! I think Lewis too.”
“Everyone has to get into a certain flow, you have to feel connected to the car. Days like today, I feel at my best level, I give 100 percent of my potential in a racing car.”
“But maybe I wasn’t at that level in Spa, or in Austria, or somewhere else.”
“You always feel that there is room for improvement, that you are not 100 percent satisfied with yourself, just like I was today.”
“Max is currently outperforming us at 100 per cent, more than any other rider. That’s why he dominates so much.”
