Last weekend there was another big party at the Zandvoort circuit, but the future of the circuit on the F1 calendar remains uncertain. The current contract to be on the F1 calendar expires in 2025 and according to director Robert van Overdijk, Formula 1 is up to the mark.
The ‘Dutch GP’ will be on the F1 calendar for at least another two years, but what will happen from 2026, they are still guessing at the Zandvoort circuit.
“We still have at least two editions to go,” says Van Overdijk in conversation with ‘NU.nl’. “Of course we will enter into discussions with FOM about the period after that. But we’re not about it. Ultimately, Formula 1 is about how many races they would like to see in Europe. So it’s their turn.”
“We are in good shape because of the successful editions we have had and we have a world star like Max. So of course we will have discussions about that, but nothing has been set in stone yet,” says Van Overdijk.
Formula 1 would like to see a lot of European races rotated, but in Zandvoort they would rather be on the F1 calendar every year. However, F1 boss Stefano Domenicali would be positive about the ‘Dutch GP’, but that does not mean that Zandvoort is sure of its place on the calendar.
“He has repeatedly said that he absolutely does not want to lose us,” says sporting director Jan Lammers. “Those are things you can easily say, but we have to do it without government support. It remains to be seen whether our fixed costs, which we have throughout the year, justify having a race alternately every other year. So we will strongly urge FOM that we really need that race every year to be able to continue to justify it.”
