Rumors circulated last week that Lance Stroll would hang up the F1 helmet and try his hand at tennis, and the Aston Martin driver has a good laugh about it.
The rumor mill in the paddock never stops and last week it resulted in a striking message. Lance Stroll would think about saying goodbye to Formula 1 and try as a tennis player.
Stroll’s career has been in the doldrums for a number of years and the arrival of Fernando Alonso to Aston Martin has not improved that. The standings in the world championship are impressive: Alonso has already scored 168 points so far, while Stroll has only managed to collect 48 points.
Lance Stroll himself dismisses the rumors as nonsense when asked the question in Zandvoort.
Tennis! I’ve heard it too, says Stroll. When I go on tour, I better work on my backhand a little bit. I don’t think I’m at that level yet.
“I like to think I’m pretty good, but I don’t think I’m ready to take on Djokovic and Alcaraz yet.”
He doesn’t know where the rumor originated, but he suspects Sky reporter David Croft.
It looked like Crofty, or someone else, came up with it. Maybe in early August he was sitting on the couch with a few beers and started thinking about my tennisspelI don’t know.
I have to ask him. It was strange, I don’t know how he came up with it, it was certainly very creative. But, I haven’t really thought about a tennis career yet.”
