Last week, thanks to our spy photographers, we were able to take a first look at the exterior of the Volkswagen Multivan California Concept. Now we can also take a look at the interior of the newest member of the extremely popular camper.
The study model of the new Volkswagencamper has been presented at the Caravan Salon currently taking place in Düsseldorf. The Germans also have one press release released over the Multivan California. In it we find new information and images that answer some of the questions that played with us.

Multifunctional kitchen unit
We found out last week (see article above) that the Multivan California has a sliding door on both sides for the first time. According to Volkswagen, this was chosen to allow versatile use of the space around the camper van. But what happens to the kitchenette that Volkswagen always installs in the motorhome? The new press photos reveal the answer: the kitchen unit remains positioned lengthwise on the side as we are used to, but is multifunctional and foldable.
For example, several drawers and cupboards have been incorporated in the block, and you can extend the worktop for more work space. You can also fold a table out of the block to create a dining area.
Practical space
The seats can be moved forward or backward. It is also possible to fold the rear seats completely down and convert them into a bed. The seats are even completely removable. Thanks to the lightweight material, this takes little effort.
In any case, Volkswagen has been busy making the space in the interior of the study model as practical as possible. For example, an electronic parking brake has been chosen instead of a physical handbrake. This creates more space between the driver and front passenger. There are also all kinds of different drawers and compartments to discover in and around the camper.
When will we see the new VW California?
Finally, of course, the pop-up roof with built-in double bed cannot be missed. This consists of a lightweight aluminum roof shell with a large panoramic opening at the front and windows at the sides. The production version of the new Volkswagen Multivan California is expected in 2024.
