After his early retirement from AlphaTauri, Nyck de Vries’ F1 chapter seemed to be definitely over, but there may still be a kind of ‘comeback’ for the Dutchman.
It was a painful farewell for Nyck de Vries at AlphaTauri. The backing from Red Bull was lost and his F1 season came to an early end. Gone from AlphaTauri, gone F1 dream he was living. A lot of mud was thrown in the media, but in the end it turned out that there was little truth to some high-profile statements that were said to have been made.
Because Daniel Ricciardo replaces Nyck de Vries at AlphaTauri, Red Bull and AlphaTauri have a reserve driver with Red Bull junior Liam Lawson, but Lawson also races the Japanese Super Formula. The last two races of that racing class overlap with the F1 race weekend in Mexico.
At Red Bull they therefore have to look for another reserve driver for the race weekend in Mexico and Nyck de Vries is said to come into the picture. Nyck de Vries is currently, despite the fact that he was pushed aside at AlphaTauri, still under contract with Red Bull. His role as third driver during the race weekend in Mexico would therefore not come as a complete surprise.
