Actually only two retirements in the Grand Prix of Belgium at Spa-Francorchamps: Carlos Sainz Jr and Oscar Piastri. The two collided in the first corner.
Piastri, second in the sprint race in his McLaren on Saturday, wanted to go inside the Spaniard from Ferrari immediately after the start. However, Sainz closed the door, with the known consequences.
Sainz made a post on social media after his branch ended. “Not what we wanted today,” said the Spaniard. “An incident during the race, but Oscar was too optimistic. He never came side by side and that move has never really worked at Spa. Congratulations to the team on an encouraging result (teammate Charles Leclerc finished third, ed.). We will continue after the break.”
Piastri did not comment on the incident, despite widespread support on social media. During the race he shouted into the radio: “I’m damaged, I’m damaged. I was pushed against the wall by the Ferrari.”
