Due to the grid penalty for Charles Leclerc, Fernando Alonso can start the race from the front row. However, Alonso is realistic and does not expect to compete with Perez and Red Bull during the race.

“In general we have to be very happy to start on the front row,” Alonso said after qualifying. “To see us competing again in Q3 is very positive.”

Despite the fact that Alonso will start the race from the front row, he does not expect to be able to fight for victory.

“I don’t know but I don’t think we’re in that position yet,” Alonso replied when asked if he has any chance of beating Perez.

“That is not our goal, to fight for victory with Checo. Purely on the basis of speed I think Red Bull is out of category, I think we need to focus more on the teams behind us on the grid.”

“I don’t want to sound pessimistic but when you look at the pace in practice sessions, and in Bahrain, we have to be honest with ourselves and admit that Red Bull has a bit of an edge over us.”

“Different teams are close together though and it will be interesting to see what that gives during the race, it will definitely be an interesting battle. Ferrari will be very strong, Mercedes is strong and Alpine is also fast here.”
