Sébastien Ogier (Toyota Yaris) is the new leader in the Rally Mexico after Finn Esapekka Lappi (Hyundai i 20) crashed on the opening stage of the third day and had to retire. Britain’s Elfyn Evans has moved up to second, trailing his French team-mate by 27.3. Thierry Neuville (Hyundai i20) is now third, at 38.9 Ogier.

After ten kilometers in the eleventh special stage, leader Esapekka Lappi lost control of his car on Saturday, after which it crashed into a power pole with the rear. The pole broke off and came to lie across the road, after which the organization was forced to wave the red flag and stop the ride. Lappi and his copilot emerged from the car unharmed. His Hyundai is badly damaged.

Ogier won the GC stage ahead of Evans and Neuville. At the finish, Ogier was informed of Lappi’s crash. “Gosh, this is such a shame for him. I always enjoy the fight. On Friday he was astonishingly fast. This is really a shame,” the Frenchman responded.

There are still twelve classification stages left for the participants in the Rally of Mexico. The Rally of Mexico ends on Sunday evening around 8:25 PM.
