Ask anyone what the most reliable car is and chances are the answer is ‘Toyota’. But is this right? Are Toyota cars really that reliable? We researched it for you!
When someone who knows a lot about cars asks us what a reliable car is, nine times out of ten we say: Toyota. The tenth time we shout ‘at least have something that comes from Japan’. Nevertheless, we cannot prevent the fact that this person will then casually arrive with a Peugeot, Volkswagen or Renault.
Source 1: ADAC praises reliability Toyota Yaris
Take the Toyota Yaris for example. That compact Toyota is doing excellently in the ‘Pannenstatistik 2022’ of the ADAC, the German sister organization of the ANWB. In the ‘Small car’ category, a relatively young Toyota Yaris scores a 3.2. If you come home with this grade, you will immediately be placed under house arrest, but in this case the lower the grade the better. This indicates the number of breakdowns per 1000 vehicles.
For comparison: a Renault Clio from 2019 does a lot less by recording 8.8 breakdowns. For the sake of completeness: standing still due to a flat tire or an empty fuel tank is not included.

Wybertje
As reliable as the Toyota Yaris is, it can be even more reliable, according to the ADAC. Even if there is a wybertje on the bodywork. In the same category, the Renault Captur scores a very good 1.7 breakdowns per 1000 admitted cars on the road. The Suzuki Swift and Suzuki Vitara show that this can be done even better, with respectively 1.4 and 1.3 breakdowns (year of construction 2019).
Source 2: Most reliable car brand of 2022
Now that we have arrived at Suzuki: according to the Consumer Association, Suzuki is the most reliable car brand of 2022. What about Toyota? Toyota has to settle for a still neat fourth place. In addition to Suzuki, Mitsubishi and Subaru are ahead of the brand. By the way, these are all Japanese car brands.
The first European car brand is in 5th place and is BMW. In 2019, it was Toyota that was named the most reliable car brand by the Consumers’ Association.

Source 3: Toyota, Lexus and BMW most reliable
Consumer Reports can be considered a bit like the American Consumer Association, but much bigger. And this consumer organization also says that you can rely on a Toyota. Consumer Reports lists Toyota, Lexus (part of Toyota) and BMW as the most reliable car brands. The consumer organization bases this on information from its members relating to more than 300,000 cars.

The independent German inspection body TÜV is also pleased with the reliability of Toyota cars. In the TÜV Report for the whole of 2022, both the Toyota Yaris and the Toyota RAV4 of two and three years old score well above average.
Conclusion
So are Toyota cars really that reliable? Yes. But car brands such as Suzuki, Mitsubishi and BMW can also do something about it. It depends on which breakdown investigation you choose. In general, you can assume that a Toyota is more reliable than many other car brands.
