In all likelihood, this will be the week of truth for Mick Schumacher. Will he keep his seat at Haas or should he prepare for a year on the sidelines? Timo Glock finds a future at Audi the ideal solution.
Haas team boss Guenther Steiner said in Mexico that he would provide clarity before the end of the season about who will drive for the American formation next year. With two races to go, this will be the week of truth for Mick Schumacher, whose seat has been up for debate for some time.
Kevin Magnussen still has a contract for next year while the deal with Schumacher expires at the end of this year. In principle it can go two ways, on the one hand he has two races to score points but on the other hand the rumors are getting louder that the decision has already been made behind the scenes and that the German can scratch his head.
Schumacher was unable to score points during the last two races in Austin and Mexico. In Austin, he encountered debris in his way during the race and that compromised his race, but Kevin Magnussen managed to pull out of the fire in ninth place. In Mexico, Schumacher was on the bum during qualifying and both Haas drivers failed to score points.
However, team boss Guenther Steiner would like to emphasize that there is nothing wrong with Schumacher’s 2023 seat depending on whether he scores points in the remaining races.
It is not the case that if Mick is in the points that he is sure of a seat for next year, according to Steiner. According to the Italian, it will be decisive who will be able to lead the team in a stable manner in the future.
Timo Glock, currently working as an analyst for Sky, saw a number of bright spots in Schumacher’s performance during the Mexican GP.
“I really liked Mick’s performance in Mexico, just like last time. The mistake with the track limits in qualifying was unfortunate. But the speed was there, he was clearly faster than his teammate in one lap. Unfortunately it didn’t work at all in the race. Maybe it was the track temperatures that kept nothing happening. Both Haas cars were unable to move towards the points.”
“It will take a few more years before Audi is really there. But of course it can be one thing. It would be a dream to have a German driver like Mick drive for a German manufacturer.”
