A few hours before the start of the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Saudi Arabia on the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, F2 was rocked by a serious crash. The accident happened at the start. Frenchman Théo Pourchaire failed to start and was hit on the starting grid by Enzo Fittipaldi, grandson of former world champion Emerson Fittipaldi.

Both pilots were helicoptered to Jeddah Military Hospital after the emergency was administered. Pourchaire came out of the crash unscathed and was allowed to leave the hospital on Sunday evening. Fittipaldi was kept in hospital for observation.
Forty minutes later, the race was flagged to start again, but after another incident – this time without too much trouble – the red flag was waved again and the race was halted for good.
It was not the first accident of the weekend on Jeddah’s new and lightning-fast street circuit. On Friday there was already the serious crash of Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc during the practice sessions, a day later World Cup leader Max Verstappen crashed during his last fast lap in qualifying. The F1 GP was also full of incidents on Sunday evening. Since it is a street circuit, the boardings are right next to the tarmac and there is no room for error.
