The 19-year-old Austrian was considered a promising motocross rider. He finished sixth in the MX2 Championship this season. The KTM rider was skiing with two friends when they got caught in an avalanche.

He had won his first Grand Prix this season in Pietramurata and represented Austria in the Motocross of Nations.

The accident happened on Saturday at an altitude of about 2,400 meters in the Lungau district. A total of eight skiers from the group were buried under 4.5 meters of snow. Two of the victims had already died when their bodies were found. This included Rene Hofer’s. A third victim succumbed to his injuries after being flown to Klagenfurt hospital. The skiers were part of a group of 11 people, all under the age of 30.
