According to Ralf Schumacher it is unbelievable what an exciting F1 title battle we are now experiencing, but he also believes that Max Verstappen should have been champion long ago.
There is indeed something to be said for it, because Max Verstappen has already lost a lot of World Cup points due to bad luck or incidents and those points could have put the title fight in a final and decisive fold for a long time.
“He was run off the track innocently in Silverstone, he was an innocent victim of the start-up crash in Hungary and of course there was the blowout that cost him the win,” Ralf Schumacher recalled several incidents in an interview with Speedweek.com which have cost Max Verstappen a lot of points this season.
“Max has had an incredible amount of bad luck, he should have been world champion a long time ago.”
Moreover, Hamilton often manages to escape a severe punishment despite mistakes.
“Lewis is often lucky when he is unlucky. Even at Imola, when he made a mistake, he still finished the race in second. There is no discussion about his talent, but he was the most fortunate of both of them this year.”
According to Schumacher, the title battle this season has also left traces at Hamilton and Verstappen. In addition, according to Schumacher, there is also more pressure on Hamilton’s shoulders.
“Hamilton doesn’t have many years left, he’s really desperate for that eighth title. Ultimately, he also doesn’t know what kind of car he will get next year when the new generation of F1 cars is introduced.”
“Max can say to himself when he loses the title fight, ‘Well, we were close, we didn’t succeed, but we still have new opportunities’. I think Lewis is under a lot more pressure.”
