Boonen still gets a kick out of winning. He told Sport/Voetbalmagazine that he started from pole position a month before his title, but saw “all sides of the track” in the first three laps due to slick tires. Until the tires got up to temperature…
“Then I drove away for 35 seconds,” said Boonen. “Kick! More than any victory as a professional driver, especially in recent years. Triumphing for the third or fourth time in Roubaix didn’t even have the same kick as my first victories as a rookie. The pleasure of winning is certainly not proportional to the importance of the competition. Everything went well, huh. That is why those first steps are the most fun, also in my second career.”
But still, a kick in a car is different than on a bicycle. “A mass sprint is an explosion of hormones. After a chaotic finale in which you find your way, shoot forward like a bolt, and then put your hands in the air. Bam! In my car there is less chaos, I experience more control. You stay hyper-focused and never go over the limit, even in a head-to-head duel with another car. Once you have crossed the finish line, the joy is very great.”
