After a win in the first heat and a third place in the second heat, Antonio Cairoli (KTM) has won the Great Britain Grand Prix in the MXGP class, the second round of the Motocross World Championship.
The 35-year-old Italian, seven-time world champion in the queen class, overtook the Slovenian reigning world champion Tim Gajser (Honda) in Winchester, who finished fourth in the first heat and won the second. Dutchman Jeffrey Herlings (KTM) completed the podium.
Jérémy Van Horebeek (Beta), 15th and 8th, was the first Belgian in 11th place. Kevin Strijbos (Yamaha), 12th and 16th, finished in 14th place and Brent Van Doninck (Yamaha), 24th and 18th, had to be content with 20th place.
In the World Cup standings, Gajser remains in the lead with 93 points. This is followed by Herlings (78). Frenchman Romain Febvre (Kawasaki), who finished fourth on Sunday, is in third place with 73 points. Cairoli follows in fourth (65). Van Horebeek is 11th (39), Strijbos 14th (28) and Van Doninck 16th (21).
Frenchman Maxime Renaux (Yamaha) took the win in the MX2 category, ahead of Italian Mattia Guadagnini (KTM) and Spaniard Ruben Fernandez (Honda). Jago Geerts, 7th and 22nd in the series, finished in 11th place.
In the World Cup standings, Fernandez leads with 79 points, followed by France’s Renaux and Matthys Boisrame (Kawasaki), fourth in the GP, with 74 points each. Geerts is eleventh with 33 points.
The third GP of the season will take place next Sunday in Maggiora, Italy.
