In many German cities, cars, campers, buses and trucks must carry an environmental sticker, even if they have a foreign registration number. Diesel vehicles from before 2001 are no longer allowed in city centers. In the case of petrol vehicles, this limit is before the 1993 construction year.

What environmental stickers are there for Germany?

There are three colors of environmental stickers: green, yellow and red. In practice, however, only one of these – the green one – is used nationally. The red environmental sticker is no longer valid anywhere and is no longer sold. The yellow sticker is only valid in Neu-Ulm at the time of writing. A blue sticker for clean vehicles has been discussed in Germany for some time.

Does an electric car also need a sticker?

Yes, even if you go to Germany with an electric car, you must stick an environmental sticker on the window.

What is the fine for not having an environmental sticker?

If you drive into an environmental zone without a sticker, you can be fined 80 euros.

Which vehicles are exempt from the sticker obligation?

Motorcycles, mopeds and mopeds, cars with a European disabled parking card and vintage cars (30 years and older, put a copy of the registration number behind the windscreen as proof) are exempt from the sticker obligation.

Where can you buy a German environmental sticker? And what does it cost?

You can buy the German environmental sticker via the ANWB webshop (delivery time: five days) for 13.95 euros, including shipping costs. In Germany you can get the sticker at municipalities, garages and some petrol stations.

Where should I stick the environmental sticker on the windscreen?

The sticker must be affixed to the bottom of the windscreen, on the passenger side (seen from the cabin: right).
