Mercedes placed both cars at the very top during the second practice session for the GP of Spain. Max Verstappen had to settle for only ninth fastest this time. Ferrari surprised with a third time for Charles Leclerc.
During the start of the second practice session we immediately got a lot of cars on the track. Most teams and drivers clearly did not waste time completing the first laps. Since this season, there have been only two one-hour practice sessions, last year that were two practice sessions of one and a half hours each on Friday.
About fifteen minutes into the session we got a virtual safety car because there were debris on the track. However, the problem was quickly resolved and full throttle could soon be driven again.
It is a pity for home driver Fernando Alonso that the stands are not allowed to be full during his return to the circuit near Barcelona, but he got plenty of attention from the Formula 1 director.
Just like during the past race weekends, a lot of attention will also be paid in Spain to respecting the track limits. On the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, they have provided strategically placed gravel bins in some places. So it is time to watch out for the drivers.
After all, pushing a little too hard on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya means that you end up in the gravel pit or in the grass.
Towards the end of the practice session it got very busy on the track, nice for the photographers but less fun for the riders.
In the end it was Lewis Hamilton who set the fastest time, followed at just over a tenth by teammate Valtteri Bottas. Charles Leclerc and Ferrari came out very strong while Max Verstappen did not get further than a ninth fastest time after a mistake during the session. Are they playing hide and seek at Red Bull? Tomorrow we will get the answer during qualifying.
