At the time of writing, consumer organization United Consumers reports that the average national recommended price is 1,897 euros, but that amount can just go up even further. This morning, for example, 1,895 euros was stated for a liter of petrol, which is exactly the record from October 2021.

A barrel of oil currently costs less than in 2012 ($ 70 compared to $ 100), but it is becoming more expensive due to the recovering world economy. In addition, the demand for aviation kerosene remains very low, so that the oil companies try to recoup their costs through the motorists.

Highest petrol price in Europe in the Netherlands

About 20 percent of the gasoline price is determined by the price of crude oil. In the Netherlands, we pay 45.6 percent excise duty and 21 percent VAT, which gives us the highest petrol price in Europe. In neighboring countries Belgium and Germany you pay 50 cents less, because a liter there currently fluctuates around 1.40 euros.
