Red Bull Motorsport boss Helmut Marko is very pleased with the performance of AlphaTauri driver Yuki Tsunoda. According to Helmut Marko, Tsunoda is a diamond in the rough that will show many beautiful things in Formula 1.
The little Japanese has enjoyed the support of Honda since 2017 and in 2019 he moved to Europe to start in the F3 Championship. Last year he competed in Formula 2 and grabbed the title, but he did take a creditable third place in the championship, which then earned him a seat at AlphaTauri.
From Dr. Helmut Marko we know that he does not look at age or experience and the twenty-two-year-old Tsunoda immediately thanked by scoring two points in his debut race.
“His way of working and the way he drives the car is fantastic,” Marko told ‘Motorsport-Total.’ “He’s also charismatic and funny, we’re glad he’s there.”
Does Marko now also have a successor for Verstappen? The previous two candidates from the training program, in the persons of Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon, were less convincing.
“We’ve only seen the first of twenty-three races, let’s wait and see. We have an incredible diamond in the rough with Yuki, we are not going to burn it. We are going to see how things develop and we will make a decision when the time is right. ”
This year, Max Verstappen has a new teammate with Sergio Perez, but the Mexican only has a one-year deal. So there is a chance that Tsunoda can start at Red Bull in 2022, but it is also not inconceivable that Pierre Gasly will get a second chance with the main force of Red Bull.
