Fernando Alonso’s comeback in Formula 1 was not a success on Sunday. The two-time world champion had to give up during the Bahrain GP, the opening round of the World Cup, in the 33rd of 56 laps. Now it appears that a stray sandwich packaging played tricks on the Spaniard.
“After his first pit stop, we had a small problem that caused us to slightly reduce the car’s performance,” explains Marcin Budkowski, Team Alpine’s executive director. “After the second pit stop, a sandwich package got stuck in the rear brake line of Fernando’s car, causing high temperatures and damaging the braking system. That’s why we took him out of the game for safety reasons. ”
